Will Waddle For Procreation...

My mom and I went to see "March of the Penguins" this morning. I didn't really know what to expect other than I had heard it averaged more money per screen last weekend than either Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Wedding Crashers....

This is hands down an inspiring movie...these penguins leave their ocean home and waddle 70+ miles to a place where they go every year to mate and raise their babies. As the movie puts it, they're seasonally monogamous, choosing one mate per season and partnering to raise one baby over a nine month period. The females lay one egg and then relinquish custody of the egg to male very carefully. If the egg is exposed to the negative 50 degree weather for more than a few seconds, no baby. The male rests the egg on his feet and has a belly roll that covers it, insulating it. At this point, the moms head off to the ocean 70 miles away to feed leaving dad on his own with no food. By time the eggs hatch, mom is well on her way back and relieves dad, who has not eaten for 120 days at this point. The reunions are touching, seriously. The babies are extremely cute and the relationship they have with their parents is just so...I don't know how to put it other than touching.

Yes, there is some death, though the film does not dwell. I guess you could say any death scenes are handled respectfully, no blood, just quietly letting them go. THere is one scene with a grieving mom that is just heartbreaking.

Go see it. You'll be entertained, inspired, and educated....
